The Best Walking Trails near Fingal Bay in Port Stephens

 

Fingal Bay is one of the small coastal towns that make up the “incredible by nature” destination of Port Stephens, NSW. Just a 2.5-hour drive north of Sydney, Fingal Bay is known for swimming, surfing, kayaking, and fishing along its crescent-shaped beach. But beyond the shore lie walking trails winding through forests and coastal landscapes, ideal for walkers and mountain bikers alike.

The walking trails across Port Stephens offer various levels of difficulty, suitable for all ages and skill levels. Nature walks are a cost-free way to connect with nature, stay active, and find mental clarity. Tomaree National Park surrounds Fingal Bay and offers trails for both beginners and adventure seekers.

 

Tomaree Head Summit Walk – A climb with a view!

Located within Tomaree National Park, this 2.2km return walk leads to the summit of Mt Tomaree for sweeping 360° views of Port Stephens. The Grade 5 trail takes around 1.5–2 hours and includes steep stairs. Good hiking shoes are recommended.

A 2km return Grade 4 track over dunes and angophora forest to secluded Wreck Beach. Start at Verona Road in Shoal Bay and enjoy a quiet swim or picnic before heading back.

Opened in 2023, this 27km walk links Tomaree Head to Birubi Point through forests, beaches, and dunes, passing culturally significant Worimi lands. Try smaller sections like:

Located 40 minutes from Fingal Bay, Tilligerry Habitat offers self-guided walks through wetlands and forests — with a high chance of spotting koalas. The gardens are open 24/7, with the visitor centre open daily (9am–3pm) and café Wednesdays only.
