If you’re on the hunt for an unspoiled rainforest sanctuary in New South Wales that offers something for everyone, look no further than the breathtaking
Dorrigo National Park (Gondwana).
This World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforest is a true gem, boasting lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and an incredible variety of birdlife, flora, and fauna.
Let’s embark on a journey through this lush paradise with our guide to Dorrigo National Park.
Dorrigo National Park is located around 45 kilometers west of Urunga. The drive from Urunga to Dorrigo takes roughly 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on your chosen route and the traffic.
If you’re looking to make the journey a day trip, make sure to stop off in
the historic town of Bellingen.
Grab a bite to eat and a coffee while wandering through boutique shops, and don’t miss the
Bellingen Gelato Bar.
It’s a picturesque journey through the countryside and an awe-inspiring drive up the mountain to Dorrigo National Park. As you ascend, look out for the waterfalls clinging to the mountainside — there are scenic pull-offs to stop and enjoy the views.
Arriving
On arrival, you’ll find lush green surroundings and a visitor centre where you can enter the park. There may be an entrance fee (usually a gold coin donation), which contributes to conservation efforts.
The visitor centre offers maps, displays, and information about the park’s unique ecosystem — great for all ages.
Skywalk
For awe-inspiring views of the rainforest canopy, don’t miss the Skywalk — an elevated boardwalk perfect for birdwatching and photography. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the coast.
Walking Tracks & Waterfalls
Dorrigo National Park offers a network of walking tracks like the Wonga Walk, Blackbutt Walking Track, Casuarina Falls Circuit, Crystal Shower Falls Walk, and Satin Bird Stroll.
Check the National Parks NSW website for full trail descriptions. There’s a track for everyone, from beginners to experienced hikers.
Bird Watching
Bird enthusiasts will be in their element — the park hosts a diverse range of bird species. Pack binoculars and listen for the many songs of lyrebirds and parrots as you walk through the rainforest.
Picnics
Numerous picnic areas are scattered throughout the park, complete with barbecues and toilets. Pack a picnic and enjoy a meal surrounded by nature, but please remember to take all rubbish with you to help protect wildlife and the pristine environment.
Cultural Experience
Held during school holidays, this two-hour tour begins at the Rainforest Centre, guided by a Gumbaynggirr ranger. Learn about local culture, language, and native plant species as you explore the forest from a new perspective.
Safety in the Park
If you plan to go hiking, fill out a trip intention form and hire a personal locator beacon from the visitor centre. You can also download the
Emergency Plus App.
Be prepared for uneven terrain and changing weather, and check park alerts on the official NPWS website before you go.
“Leave only footprints” — respect the Gumbaynggirr land by taking your rubbish and preserving the park’s beauty.
Dorrigo National Park is a sanctuary for nature enthusiasts, hikers, and photographers — a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the splendor of one of Australia’s most remarkable rainforests.
